Flash Tier on NGX Storage: Overview and Benefits

Print

NGX Storage’s Flash Tier feature allows administrators to designate a high-performance storage layer — typically composed of flash media — that works alongside the primary capacity tier to accelerate workload performance. Rather than replacing the main storage pool, the Flash Tier acts as an intelligent extension of it, automatically handling metadata and small random I/O operations that benefit the most from low-latency media. This results in significantly improved response times across the entire pool without requiring a full all-flash deployment.

The Flash Tier is configured at the storage pool level and operates transparently to applications and end users. For file-based workloads served over SMB or NFS, the Flash Tier accelerates filesystem-level metadata such as directory structures, file names, timestamps, and permissions — since the storage system itself owns and manages that filesystem layer — while actual file data remains on the capacity tier. For object-based workloads, metadata is automatically placed on the Flash Tier to improve lookup and access performance, while object data itself continues to reside on the capacity tier.

When sizing a Flash Tier, it is important to provision sufficient capacity to accommodate metadata, which grows proportionally with the number of files or objects stored in the pool. The required Flash Tier capacity should be calculated upfront based on the expected file count, object count, and workload characteristics — metadata-intensive environments such as file servers with millions of small files or large object stores with dense namespaces will require proportionally more Flash Tier capacity. It is recommended to perform this sizing exercise before pool creation to avoid under-provisioning. That said, NGX Storage supports seamless online expansion of the Flash Tier after the pool has been created, allowing administrators to grow it without disruption as workload demands evolve.
